How to become a Professional Engineer in Malaysia?


Hi all viewers, I think many of you have this in your mind. In Malaysia, engineers are regulated by the Board of Engineer Malaysia in accordance to Registration of Engineer Act 1967 and Registration of Engineers Regulations 1990.

How to become a professional engineer for Electrical category?

1. BEM registration for graduate engineer needs to be in electrical category.

Remarks: If he/ she is registered as electronic category, what should he/ she do?
He/ she can applied for electrical conversion program in accredited institution by BEM. Currently, only UNITEN is recognized to run this program.

2. There is new amendment for Act and Rules. Currently, there is two tier for professional engineer as picture below:

P/S: Once you are a professional engineer, you are still unable to sign the practicing certificate until a professional competency examination is attended and passed.

3. For the new amendment, requirement for graduate engineer to be entitled to apply for professional engineer registration are as below:

a) the Graduate Engineer must undergo –
     (i) >= 2 years - general training        
     (ii) >= 1 year of professional career development and training

*Supervision from same category PE or branches.

b)Courses attendance

(i) Code of Ethics 12 hrs
(ii) Health and Safety at Work 12 hrs
(iii) Engineering Management Practice 12 hrs and
(iv) Courses related to graduate’s branch of engineering 24 hrs

c)Completion of 30units PDP

(i) technical talks
(ii) seminars
(iii) society/association meetings and
(iv) community services

BEM tighten their PE certificate in order to have better quality and standard.
